Plastic-Free Sundarbans: How Your Small Steps Can Save the Mangrove Paradise
When our boat starts moving through the Sundarbans early in the morning slowly passing the mist everything feels so peaceful. But then, if you suddenly see a dirty bottle or some plastic floating there, it’s just heartbreaking. Believe me, it feels like a big stain on the beauty of Sundarbans environment.
I know, we all think a single chip packet doesn’t matter much. But when you look at the thousands of tourists doing the same thing, the amount of trash is just scary. And friends, that is the reality. It is precisely this minor insignificance of ours that has today become a thorn in the side of the world’s largest forest.
When the Forest Cannot Breathe
Look, the trees out there are totally different from what you see in a local garden. These mangroves are simply wonderful because their roots grow straight up to catch some oxygen from above. If we keep throwing plastic there, it gets wrapped around those roots. It’s like choking the tree! If these roots don’t get air, the trees just can’t stay alive. It’s a slow death. And think about the fish—they end up eating our plastic waste. At the end of the day, all that plastic trash finds its way back into our own food. It’s a cycle that’s honestly quite terrifying, don’t you think?
So, if you’re ever visiting the Sundarbans with your gang or family—just remember one thing. We need to be a lot more kind to this forest. It’s our duty, after all!
As tourists, surely we, too, bear a certain responsibility!
Whenever we plan a Sundarbans trip and get excited to explore, we often forget that we are just guests here. Nature is our host. Just think for a second—is it fair to hurt someone who is welcoming us into their home?
1. Your Bottle Is Best: Why keep buying plastic bottles repeatedly? Just carry a simple metal bottle from your home. It beats buying plastic bottles all the time. Plus, our boats are stocked with fresh water, so you can easily top up your bottle when you need it.
2. Dispose of Waste Properly: Try not to just toss plastic wherever you like, please. There are bins on the boat for a reason! If we keep the forest clean, it looks beautiful for all of us to enjoy.
3. Cloth Bags: Swap those thin plastic bags for a simple cloth one. It’s a very simple step, but man, it makes a big change. This simple choice helps protect the environment.
The Bond Between People and the Land
Just look at it this way—keeping the Sundarban environment clean is important because the local people here rely on this forest for every little thing. When these mangrove trees are okay, they can gather honey, and when the rivers are clean, they catch fish. That’s why, when we’re planning these Sundarbans trip, we have one simple goal: to leave the place just the way it was when we arrived. Basically, you carry back nothing but amazing memories.
Trust me, spotting a tiger here or just walking through this wild place is something you’ll never forget. It’s critical we make sure this forest still feels just as alive years from now. This isn’t just for us, you know? To be fair, we want our children and even their kids—to get the chance to experience this wonderful spot with their own eyes. Imagine how proud they’d feel to stand here and shout, ‘Wow, so this is the Sundarbans, the real kingdom of the Royal Bengal Tiger!
A Final Word
Hello, I am Biswanath Naskar, the owner of Sundarban Packages—Maa Laxmi Travels.
I want to share something from my heart. Just last Friday, when I was visiting Sajnekhali, I saw plastic bottles floating in the water. It was honestly a very sad and painful sight for me. This forest is like our home, and seeing it treated this way is heartbreaking.
Everything I have shared in this article comes from my years of personal experience in the mangroves. I earnestly request every one of you: please help us save the Sundarbans. We must remember that if nature survives, we survive. Let’s promise not to do anything that harms this beautiful wild paradise. Trust me, even a small step counts!
