History of Sundarban

In 1997, Sundarban was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Although parts of Sundarbans belonging to India and Bangladesh are part of a single ecotope, they were individually listed as Sundarbán and Sundarbán National Park. On the territory of Sundarbans is a complex network of tidal canals, watts, and small islands with mangroves. The region is home to the legendary Bengal tiger, as well as deer, snakes, many species of birds, bull sharks, river dolphins, and the largest predators of Asia – combed crocodiles. According to 2010 data, about 500 Bengal tigers and about 30,000 deer lived in the region. Due to the inaccessibility of the park area, it became the habitat of the largest king tiger population on the Hindustan Peninsula, as well as many wild boars, deer, and rhesus monkeys. The axis is found in the park, the brightly spotted deer, the pork deer close to the shaft, the Dubach bear, the mountain, and wild elephants.

Check Out Sundarban’s Mangrove Forest

Mangrove forest is the largest in the East. Under this common name, a group of islands with mangroves is also united. The protected forest area in Bangladesh covers 6 thousand square kilometers of surface in the south-west of the country. Three hundred thirty-three species of plants grow here. In reservoirs, there are more than 400 species of fish and 35 species of amphibians. In the forests, 315 species of birds live (45 of them are migratory), 42 species of mammals. Evergreen vegetation is dense and continuous, located on silty protected shores and in coastal areas subject to periodic flooding by tidal waters. Sunderbans Forests intersect with an extensive network of rivers, canals, and streams. This place attracts nature lovers and tourists as a vast reservoir of genetic biodiversity and the habitat of the largest population (from 300 to 500 individuals) of the majestic Royal Bengal tiger. Also, spotted deer, rhesus macaques, and the Indian smooth otter, as well as giant combed crocodiles, pythons, monitor lizards, and king cobra, are found here from land mammals. It will be interesting for tourists to observe fishing by the local tribe – they use tamed domestic otters as gear.

Geographical Location of Sundarban

Given the importance of the mangroves, they have become part of UNESCO World Heritage. It is located in the Ganges Delta in India and Bangladesh. Far from the ocean, part of Sundarban is covered by seasonally flooded freshwater swamp forests. The territory of Sundarban is 10,000 km², of which 6,000 km² are located in Bangladesh. The fertile soils of the Ganges delta for many centuries underwent intensive cultivation, as a result of which only small enclaves of the original forest cover were preserved. The surviving forests and mangroves of Sundarban are an essential habitat for the endangered Bengal tiger. Also, Sundarban has a critical barrier function that protects millions of Calcutta and surrounding areas from cyclones. If you would like to visit Sundarban then check this page.
